San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak has decided to withdraw from consideration for various head-coaching positions within the NFL and will remain with the 49ers. This decision comes amid speculation about his potential appeal as a candidate for teams seeking a head coach, particularly those looking for an offensive-minded assistant to complement their defensive leaders.

Kubiak joined the 49ers’ coaching staff in 2021, steadily advancing under head coach Kyle Shanahan. His coaching journey began as the assistant quarterbacks coach during the 2022 season, a pivotal year when the team drafted quarterback Brock Purdy. Following that, he took on the role of passing game specialist in 2024 before becoming the offensive coordinator in 2025.

During his tenure, Kubiak has gained valuable experience, including his first play-calling duties during the 2024 regular-season finale. Although this game was ultimately meaningless, the 49ers showcased their offensive prowess with 436 yards. Notably, he played a crucial role in the team’s success during the playoffs, suggesting innovative plays like the “Skyy Bang Reverse Pass,” which contributed to their wild-card victory over Philadelphia.

Shanahan has expressed his confidence in Kubiak’s abilities, making it clear that he values Kubiak as his offensive coordinator. “He calls a lot of plays here,” Shanahan noted, emphasizing the importance of retaining Kubiak within the 49ers’ organization. This is particularly significant given the current wave of head-coaching vacancies in the NFL, with several teams, including the Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders, and Cleveland Browns, still on the lookout for new leadership.

Kubiak previously engaged in a virtual interview with the Pittsburgh Steelers but opted to step back from consideration for the head coaching role there. His decision to stay with the 49ers could signal a commitment to continuing the team’s offensive development under Shanahan’s guidance, offering an optimistic outlook for the upcoming season as the 49ers look to build on their recent successes.
