Residents of the Kinoya community have expressed ongoing frustration over the lack of progress toward realizing their dreams for a multi-purpose court at the Velau grounds. The community’s president, Viniana Sinaitakala Seru, is reaching out to the government for assistance in bringing this crucial project to fruition, emphasizing its significance for the local youth.
For years, the community has shown unwavering dedication to this initiative, hosting events such as Kinoya Day to raise funds for the court. “We’ve been working hard on this project for a long time. We even organized Kinoya Day to raise money for the court,” Seru remarked. The proposed facility aims to be a hub for popular sports like volleyball, netball, and basketball, which are vital for encouraging athletic growth among young people.
The lack of a proper sports facility has not only stifled local youths’ athletic dreams but has also raised concerns about potential negative outcomes, including increased risks of crime and substance abuse. Kinoya has faced significant challenges related to substance issues, and the community believes the new court could engage local youth in positive activities, steering them away from harmful influences.
In response to these pressing issues, two local pastors have initiated efforts to assist at-risk youths, providing guidance and mentorship to help them navigate away from criminal behavior. Seru appreciates their vital contribution, recognizing how their involvement is essential in mentoring and supporting those who may have faced legal challenges.
The urgent need for recreational space in Kinoya has gained the attention of government officials, including former Minister for Infrastructure, Meteorological Services, Lands and Mineral Resources, Jone Usamate, and the current Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo. “During our last Kinoya community day in 2022, our chief guest, Jone Usamate, became aware of our request for suitable land,” Seru explained. With another Community Day scheduled for November 29, where Minister Vosarogo is expected to attend, Seru remains hopeful about gaining further government support. “I am excited about what is to come. With the support of the Nasinu Town Council and the Government, we are getting closer to making our dream a reality.”
This determination aligns with broader initiatives across Fiji, where the establishment of new multi-purpose courts has been a catalyst for fostering community engagement and promoting positive youth development. These facilities not only create venues for sports but also strengthen community ties, essential for nurturing future generations. The Kinoya community’s steadfast efforts reflect a hopeful commitment to enhancing their local environment, aiming to provide vital resources for their youth while reinforcing communal connections.
