Square Enix has announced the cancellation of its highly anticipated GPS-based action RPG, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, which was initially set for release on iOS and Android platforms. The game, first revealed in April 2022, had undergone a closed prototype test in January 2023 and was originally scheduled for a 2024 release. However, by November of the previous year, the project was delayed indefinitely.
In a statement released on May 14, the development team expressed their deep regret over the decision, apologizing to fans eagerly waiting for the game’s launch. They noted, “Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game… we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time,” highlighting the challenges faced in meeting players’ expectations.
Moreover, the developers acknowledged the crucial contributions of players who participated in the closed beta testing and supported the project during its early phases. Despite this unfortunate turn, the commitment of Square Enix to the Kingdom Hearts franchise remains firm, as they confirmed that work on Kingdom Hearts IV continues. While no new information or release timeline has been provided for Kingdom Hearts IV, the company encourages fans to remain engaged with the series, promising further updates in the future.
This cancellation, while disappointing for fans, serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in game development and maintaining player satisfaction. Nevertheless, the ongoing development of Kingdom Hearts IV symbolizes a hopeful future for the franchise, suggesting that there are still exciting prospects ahead for Kingdom Hearts enthusiasts.
