What began as a simple act of kindness has transformed into a memorable moment for 19-year-old Viliame Waqalevu. The young player from Bouma, Taveuni, is currently taking part in the Dominion Brothers under-21 team at the 17th Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s tournament held at Ganilau Park. This marks his debut at the tournament, where he not only showcases his rugby talents but also embodies a spirit of camaraderie and generosity.

Waqalevu has described his experience at the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s as immensely rewarding, highlighting the value of facing strong competition in order to enhance his skills on the field. A notable incident occurred when he was seen sharing his rugby boot with a fellow player from a rival team, an act that quickly gained viral attention online on February 5.

“I’ve known him since our YMCA days, that’s why we’re so close,” Waqalevu reflected on his connection with the other player. “We used to share bus cards, food, and even clothes at times.”

Such generosity did not go unnoticed. On February 6, renowned sports photographer Pita Simpson gifted Waqalevu a new size nine rugby boot, enabling him to continue participating in the tournament without concern for his footwear.

Waqalevu’s journey in rugby began early in life. “I used to play kaji rugby and continued at Nasinu Secondary School,” he shared. His passion has seen him involved in significant matches, including the Deans final.

Growing up as the eldest of six siblings in a modest household has instilled strong values in Waqalevu. He attributes much of his success to the unwavering support from his family. “My family is my biggest support system, and because of their love and teachings, I’m able to play and be part of the team,” he expressed with gratitude towards his parents—his mother, a teacher, and his father, a farmer.

This inspiring story underscores the impact of kindness and community spirit, as Viliame Waqalevu’s actions, both on and off the field, demonstrate the true essence of sportsmanship.
