As anticipation builds for the release of “The Old Guard 2,” KiKi Layne is already looking ahead to a potential third installment in the action-packed franchise. Speaking passionately, Layne expressed her hopes, saying, “I pray for it. I’m like, ‘Please, everybody watch this movie. Come on, let’s get this greenlit.’ I would love to do it again.”
In the sequel, available on Netflix and directed by Victoria Mahoney, Layne reprises her role as Nile, an immortal ex-Marine. This time, she joins her fellow immortals—including Charlize Theron, Matthias Schoenaerts, and newcomers Uma Thurman and Quynh, played by Veronica Ngô—to thwart a plot aimed at human destruction.
Layne, who trained rigorously for five months prior to the first film, admits she had to readjust her training regimen for the sequel. “When it was greenlit, I had met my man and we were eating good, so I had to make some adjustments,” she reflects. The physicality of the role is something she relishes, praising the opportunity to honor the character of Nile through her training. She even performed many of her own stunts, including a daring jump from a balcony, despite moments of hesitation.
Her experience alongside Uma Thurman was particularly memorable for Layne. She described Thurman as having a “beautiful grace” and noted how committed she was to understanding each scene. Layne emphasized the importance of representation, especially for young Black girls who might see themselves in her character. She remarked, “That’s what I do it for. I hope to be the representation for little Black girls that I wish I had more of growing up.”
Given the competitive nature of the industry, Layne acknowledged the challenges actors face, sharing that during tough times, she turns to her fiancé, Ari Stachel, for support. His understanding of the industry, combined with the encouragement she receives from her family, helps her navigate the ups and downs of her career.
Lastly, Layne reflects positively on her journey, noting that every experience in her career contributes to her growth. She shared her gratitude for the relationships formed during projects, asserting, “It was so much fun. We had a great time, and I met my man.”
This upcoming release serves not only as a testament to Layne’s talent but also as a herald of exciting possibilities in the action genre, especially for women of color. “The Old Guard 2” promises to deliver thrilling content while potentially opening doors for more stories featuring diverse leads in the future.
