Kike Hernández’s Vision Turnaround Spurs Eye Health Campaign

The American Optometric Association (AOA) has enlisted professional baseball player Kike Hernández to spearhead its “Eye Deserve More” campaign, emphasizing the crucial role of in-person eye exams in improving both personal and athletic performance. Hernández’s involvement is deeply personal; after witnessing a decline in his batting average last season, he presumed he was merely in a slump. However, an in-person visit to an optometrist revealed he had astigmatism, a common condition often overlooked due to its subtle symptoms. Following corrective treatment, Hernández experienced an impressive turnaround in his performance, significantly contributing to his team’s successful record.

Hernández shared his newfound appreciation for eye care, stating, “I learned the hard way that the most advanced equipment I own are my eyes.” With his optometrist’s guidance, he was able to enhance his game and help his team secure victories.

Dr. Emily Benson, O.D. from the AOA, sheds light on how even top-tier athletes might overlook vision-related issues. She asserts that comprehensive, in-person eye exams are crucial for optimal performance, whether on the sports field or in everyday tasks.

The AOA’s campaign introduces a conceptual product named The Eye, designed to underscore the complexities and inherent value of human vision. The initiative aims to encourage Americans to prioritize eye health, especially when people are more inclined to upgrade their devices than schedule an eye exam.

Optometrists in the United States are responsible for over two-thirds of primary eye care and can identify more than 270 systemic health conditions, often before symptoms develop. The “Eye Deserve More” campaign seeks to educate families on the superiority of comprehensive in-person eye exams over basic screenings or online vision tests.

For Hernández, who is also a father and soon to welcome another child, promoting eye health takes on added importance. “With a daughter and a new baby on the way, it’s even more important that we take care of our eyes,” he remarked. Witnessing the positive impact on his teammate whom he encouraged to see an optometrist, Hernández emphasizes the significant benefits of professional eye care.
