Kia EV4: What to Expect from the Upcoming All-Wheel Drive and GT Models?

Kia has announced that its new EV4 will feature all-wheel drive and performance-oriented GT versions, a spokesperson confirmed during the global launch event in Seoul. Anticipated to hit the market in the first quarter of 2026, these new variants are expected to be introduced later that year.

The spokesperson mentioned that production for North America and Australia will begin in the last quarter of this year. Currently, the EV4 is only available in South Korea, where it was launched earlier this year in a single motor, front-wheel drive configuration. Customers can choose between a 58.3-kWh or an 81.4-kWh battery pack, with the electric motor rated at 201 horsepower. There is also a “GT-Line” trim available, though it mainly offers cosmetic alterations rather than performance enhancements.

The addition of all-wheel drive likely involves introducing an extra motor for the rear wheels, which could enhance power output. While specific details on the AWD EV4 have not been disclosed, Kia has confirmed its future availability. Similarly, there is limited information on the EV4 GT, apart from acknowledging its development. Based on the existing GT lineup, the EV4 GT may offer power levels below that of the high-performing EV6 GT, which utilizes dual motors to deliver 576 horsepower.

As for competition, the EV4 GT will face off against models such as the Tesla Model 3 Performance, which has a dual-motor system that produces 510 horsepower. Additionally, the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 6 N, which shares its platform with the EV4, is expected to be more powerful and pricier.

Kia is aiming for an EPA-estimated range of 330 miles for the larger battery option and 235 miles for the smaller one. It’s worth noting that while the addition of all-wheel drive may enhance performance, it could reduce the overall range of the vehicle due to increased weight and energy demands. For instance, the highly-rated EV6 GT is estimated to have a range of 218 miles.

Another point of concern is where the EV4 will be manufactured, as it remains unclear if production will occur in the U.S., abroad, or possibly in Mexico. The location could affect pricing via tariffs if built outside the U.S.

Kia is currently focused on getting the standard trims for the EV4 to market, raising anticipation for the upcoming AWD and GT versions that promise exciting advancements in performance and technology.
