Kevin Parker Defends Artistic Freedom Ahead of Tame Impala’s Deadbeat Release

Tame Impala, led by multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker, has addressed criticism regarding his music’s shift towards a more commercial sound as he prepares for the release of his fifth studio album, ‘Deadbeat’, which drops tomorrow, October 17. In a conversation with Zane Lowe, Parker responded to claims that his recent work is more focused on generating profit, emphasizing his artistic integrity.

Highlighting the misconception that his focus has shifted solely to financial gain, Parker remarked that if he were merely chasing commercial success, he would repeat past successes and follow a predictable formula. “If I didn’t care about the music anymore… the way you would know that is if I just did the same thing again,” Parker explained. He underscored that the true essence of creativity lies in exploring the unknown and avoiding a formulaic approach that might ensure commercial viability.

Reflecting on the bold choices behind his seminal 2015 album, ‘Currents’, Parker noted its departure from traditional guitar-driven sounds and the inclusion of electronic elements, showcasing a willingness to take risks. He expressed that he would feel defeated as an artist if he chose a path of predictability and control, stating, “I would far rather it this way than the way where I know it’s planned out ahead of me.”

In the interview, Parker also shared insights into the creative process behind previous hits like ‘Elephant’ and ‘New Person, Same Ol’ Mistakes’, revealing that many tracks faced uncertainty about making it onto albums. This vulnerability reflects the artistic dilemmas and deliberations that artists often navigate, showcasing Parker’s authenticity in his music.

In addition to the album release, Tame Impala has an extensive tour schedule lined up, including dates across the US, UK, and Europe starting in October 2025 and continuing into April 2026. Fans can expect a thrilling show as Parker brings his innovative sound to stages around the globe.

His music, which has transitioned over the years, continues to break boundaries and challenge norms, securing his standing as a vital artist in modern music. As fans eagerly await ‘Deadbeat’ and the upcoming tour, Parker’s commitment to creativity and exploration remains evident.
