Kenya Mourns Raila Odinga: The Man Who Shaped Democracy—and Sparked Debate

Kenya has lost one of its most influential political figures, Raila Odinga, who passed away at the age of 80 in India due to a cardiac arrest after receiving medical treatment. Odinga, who had a long-standing and tumultuous career in the political landscape of Kenya, was known for his unwavering commitment to democracy and reforms that transformed the nation.

Having been imprisoned multiple times in his fight against one-party autocracy, Odinga ran for the presidency five times, earning both loyalty and critique throughout his journey. His political career was marked by significant alliances, including serving as the country’s Prime Minister in a coalition government aimed at stabilizing Kenya after a period of intense political violence following the contested 2007 elections, which caused immense suffering with about 1,300 deaths and displacements.

Odinga’s ability to navigate alliances—often with former adversaries—earned him the moniker “Agwambo,” meaning “the mysterious one” in the Luo language, and “Baba,” meaning “father” in Swahili. His supporters remained steadfast even in times of controversy, with accusations that he sometimes exploited ethnic divisions for political gain.

Following the news of his death, crowds gathered in his hometown of Kisumu and in the Nairobi slum of Kibera, where called upon by tradition, many supporters participated in a procession to his family’s home while mourning the loss of a cherished leader. His legacy as a champion of multiparty democracy, sealed by the reforms in 1991 and the new constitution introduced in 2010, leaves a profound impact on Kenya’s political landscape.

Tragically, Odinga’s life was not without its shadows; he frequently faced accusations regarding his political strategies, especially after periods of violence linked to tribal loyalty during elections. His tenure also included unifying moments, like the historic 2018 reconciliation with then-President Uhuru Kenyatta, known as the “Handshake,” which aimed to bridge the political divide in Kenya.

President William Ruto, who visited Odinga’s family, declared seven days of national mourning in recognition of Odinga’s immense contributions to the country, emphasizing that Odinga’s efforts laid the foundation for the rights and freedoms Kenyans enjoy today. Internationally, tributes poured in, acknowledging Odinga as a steadfast champion of democracy not just in Kenya but across the continent.

Although opinions on Odinga’s legacy are mixed, with some praising his dedication to democratic ideals and others critiquing his political maneuvers, it’s undeniable that his vision and activism have significantly shaped Kenya’s history. As the nation mourns, there is hope that his fight for democracy will inspire current and future leaders to uphold the values he championed.
