HAZARD, Ky. – The National Day of Giving, commonly known as “Giving Tuesday,” is celebrated on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving and originated in 2012. Its primary goal is to inspire people to engage in charitable acts and contribute positively to their communities.
In the mountains of Kentucky, local organizations have embraced this day to raise crucial funds for their initiatives. According to Mindy Miller, Director of Development and Communications for the Housing Development Alliance (HDA), “Giving Tuesday” represents a significant fundraising opportunity for non-profit organizations like HDA, which relies on grants and donations to support its operations.
HDA is currently focused on rebuilding homes that were destroyed in a devastating flood two years ago. In the past months, they have successfully reconstructed 31 homes, but approximately 500 remain lost. Miller pointed out that donations go directly towards essential building materials, including nails, shingles, and flooring, making an immediate difference in the local community.
Carrie McCall, Corps Officer for the Salvation Army in Middlesboro, highlighted that “Giving Tuesday” serves as a reminder of the true spirit of the holiday season, especially following a period filled with shopping and consumerism. The Salvation Army provides vital services, including meals for the homeless four days a week, assistance with utilities and rent, and daily food pantry services. McCall stressed that individual donations are the organization’s primary financial support, with no government funding available.
For this season, McCall aims to raise $100,000 to ensure the continuance of their year-round services, while HDA’s goal for “Giving Tuesday” was set at $1,500. By the end of the day, they exceeded their target by raising $1,680.
The leaders of both organizations emphasized that every contribution, no matter the size, significantly impacts their ability to serve the community and assist those in need.
This year’s “Giving Tuesday” not only showcased the positive spirit of generosity but also highlighted the resilience of local organizations committed to making a difference in their communities.
In a world where challenges often loom large, this day serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that the power of collective goodwill can lead to lasting positive change.
