Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart expressed unwavering support for head coach Mark Stoops, emphasizing confidence in the football program amid rising fan frustration. Following a recent meeting of the Champions Blue Board of Governors, Barnhart reiterated the university’s commitment to achieving success on the field.
“Make no mistake about it, we want success,” he shared with the Lexington Herald-Leader. Barnhart highlighted Stoops’ history of stability and development since 2013, when he took over a struggling program and led Kentucky to eight consecutive bowl seasons—a remarkable achievement in the school’s history. However, Barnhart acknowledged that recent challenges, particularly in light of college football’s rapid changes, including the impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and the transfer portal, have tested the resilience of the program.
With the Wildcats currently striving to maintain bowl eligibility, fan criticism has intensified due to inconsistent performances and missed opportunities. Barnhart empathized with the fans’ frustrations and their desire to witness Kentucky return to the successful runs experienced during Stoops’ ascent in the mid-2010s. Still, he reassured that the coaching staff is dedicated to improving the team’s performance each week, stating, “Mark is working hard. Are we where we want to be? Absolutely not, but we will continue to battle and see if we can find it. We’ve got seven games left and an opportunity to get better every week.”
Barnhart also commended Stoops for his reputation as a talent developer, which is an integral part of Kentucky’s identity. He pointed out the current need for balancing the nurturing of homegrown talent with the influx of experienced players from the transfer portal. Finally, he reaffirmed his belief in Stoops, expressing gratitude for what the coach has accomplished and vowing to support him as they move forward together.
This statement from Barnhart showcases a strong resolve within Kentucky athletics to navigate this challenging period, highlighting the determination to find a path back to success on the football field. The support from the administration may serve as a motivational boost for the team as they look to improve in the remaining games of the season.
