Kenta Maeda’s Fresh Start: Cubs Sign Former Tigers Pitcher

Kenta Maeda, the former pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, has signed a minor-league contract with the Chicago Cubs, marking a new chapter in his career. This development was initially reported by Daily Sports and later confirmed by Vinne Duber of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Maeda’s departure from the Tigers came after he was designated for assignment on May 1, 2025, amid a two-year contract worth $24 million that he signed in November 2023. Throughout his time in Detroit, Maeda struggled significantly, finishing the previous season with a record of 3-7 and a disappointing 6.09 ERA over 112⅓ innings, which included 17 starts and 12 relief appearances.

During spring training, Maeda was initially vying for a spot in the Tigers’ rotation but found himself relegated to the bullpen as he struggled to compete with fellow pitchers Casey Mize and rookie Jackson Jobe. His performance in the previous season was marked by challenges, particularly in low-leverage situations, where he logged a 7.88 ERA over eight innings.

While the Cubs have brought him on board, the Tigers remain responsible for the approximately $10 million still owed on Maeda’s contract for this season. The Cubs will pay him under the terms of the new minor-league deal.

This signing could provide Maeda an opportunity for a fresh start with the Cubs, potentially revitalizing his career after a tough stint in Detroit. His experience and skills could benefit the Cubs’ pitching depth as he works to get back into form.
