Kazakhstan is set to establish its first national cargo airline in early 2026, aiming to enhance its position as a pivotal aviation hub in the region. Nurlan Zhakupov, the chairman of the Samruk-Kazyna national welfare fund, provided insights on this initiative, revealing that the airline will start with three leased aircraft, with plans to expand the fleet to ten in alignment with global standards.
This initiative aligns with a broader ambition, driven by the burgeoning global air cargo market, which sees a significant 57.7 million tons of cargo transported annually, with approximately 15% of international shipments navigating through Kazakhstan’s airspace. The project reflects President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s directive to solidify the country’s status as a dominant player in regional aviation.
“Comprehensive efforts are being made to enhance airport infrastructure and domestic transport networks,” stated Bektenov, emphasizing that the cargo airline’s launch is crucial for redirecting transit flows to Kazakhstan and solidifying its foothold in the air cargo market. Moreover, strategies are underway to secure a reliable fuel supply to maintain the airline’s profitability.
Kazakhstan’s aviation sector has witnessed significant growth, with Kazakh airlines transporting 7.2 million passengers in the first half of 2025, marking a 6% increase from the previous year. This surge is complemented by a total of 14.4 million passengers across airports, indicative of the increasing demand for air travel. The country has also invested in improving its infrastructure, having renovated 20 runways and 19 terminals, along with establishing a new airport in Turkistan.
Additionally, the government plans for substantial investments totaling $2.9 billion in the aviation sector, which will support the development of new airports and the reconstruction of key infrastructure. By 2030, the fleet is expected to grow to 221 aircraft, with new and resumed routes anticipated in the coming years.
