Petero Uluinaceva, a kava farmer from Kadavu, emphasizes the competitive nature of the kava industry, observing a rise in both quality and pricing over the years. Despite the challenges faced, he praises the resilience and adaptability of local farmers who are evolving their strategies to succeed in the changing kava market.

“I have always promised myself that once I retire, I want to live in Suva and sell my Yaqona. The prices have increased over the years, which is a huge benefit for the business,” Uluinaceva shared. His recent relocation to Suva illustrates his commitment to establishing his business and better supporting his family.

While difficulties persist regarding market accessibility and post-harvest tactics, many kava growers are taking a proactive approach. They are diversifying their product offerings and engaging directly with consumers, which not only boosts their income prospects but also nurtures a sense of hope within the farming community.
