Kate Hudson, Hugh Jackman Star in Song Sung Blue: A Christmas Musical Tale

Kate Hudson is making waves following the unveiling of the first trailer for her upcoming film, “Song Sung Blue,” in which she stars alongside Hugh Jackman. The 46-year-old actress has garnered acclaim from critics before the film’s official release, and her performance elicited heartfelt reactions from her parents, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, affectionately known as “Pa.”

During an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” Kate shared that her parents were brought to tears while watching the film. “They were a mess,” she confessed, highlighting that even she and Hugh were emotionally overwhelmed when they viewed it for the first time. “It is such an intense love story,” she noted.

“Song Sung Blue” is a biographical musical drama inspired by the true story of Mike and Claire Sardina, a couple from Milwaukee who reinvent their lives as a Neil Diamond tribute act named Lightning & Thunder. The film’s premise revolves around two struggling musicians, portrayed by Hudson and Jackman, who create a joyful tribute band, showcasing the message that it’s never too late to find love and pursue one’s dreams.

Kate also revealed that Neil Diamond himself approved of the film. Having grown up near him, she seized the chance to meet him, which turned out to be an emotionally enriching experience. “He loves Mike and Claire, and he loves the movie,” she remarked about Diamond’s response.

Hugh added that Neil had personally reached out to him, moved to tears by the film. Their meeting included an impromptu karaoke session featuring classics like “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Misérables” and “Sweet Caroline,” further evidencing the deep connections formed through music.

The narrative explores Mike and Claire’s ascent from local entertainers to passionate performers, tackling themes of love, redemption, and the challenges posed by Mike’s troubled past and a life-altering accident that affects Claire.

Set to premiere on Christmas Day, “Song Sung Blue” has already drawn admiration for its “amazing” trailer, with viewers describing it as a potential “masterpiece.” Critics highlight the genuine portrayal of the couple’s journey to fame during the ’80s and ’90s, praising both Hudson and Jackman for their dazzling performances, which include them singing live.

In addition to the leading duo, the film features an impressive supporting cast that includes Michael Imperioli from “The Sopranos” and Fisher Stevens of “Succession.” Neil Diamond’s involvement further legitimizes the film, as he has granted the use of his music, adding authenticity to the story.

Having premiered at the AFI Film Festival on October 26, “Song Sung Blue” currently enjoys an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have described it as a “real, emotional” snapshot of life’s unpredictability, while others have called it a “big-hearted and winning musical love story filled with emotion.” With its blend of true story, compelling performances, and the allure of Neil Diamond’s music, anticipation for the film is palpable.
