Kashmir is currently experiencing a fresh wave of weather changes, with recent snowfall observed in the higher regions and the expectation of heavy rainfall across several districts as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). An orange alert has been issued for seven districts, including Muzaffarabad, Bandipora, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Anantnag, and Kishtwar, indicating anticipated heavy rainfall.
In addition, a yellow alert, which signifies moderate rainfall, has been placed for regions such as Kupwara, Ganderbal, Srinagar, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Poonch, Mirpur, Jammu, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, and Doda.
The weather forecast for Srinagar predicts moderate rainfall, with temperatures expected to peak around 30°C and drop to a minimum of 14°C. Areas like Tulail, Razdan Top in Gurez Valley, Peer Ki Gali in Shopian, and Zojila Pass also received snowfall, leading to a decrease in temperatures across the region. The minimum temperature recorded a drop of up to 3 degrees, with maximum temperatures on Friday noted to be 3–5 degrees below normal.
Faizan Arif, an independent weather spotter, indicated that intense rains could trigger landslides and cause shooting stones on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. He also warned of the possibilities of cloudbursts and lightning strikes.
Looking ahead, the IMD has forecast light rain or thundershowers in isolated locations on June 2, with generally dry conditions expected from June 4 to 6, though light showers may occur in the late afternoon. Brief spells of rain and thundershowers are anticipated again on June 7 and 8.
Overall, while the weather poses some challenges, it also brings vital precipitation that could benefit the region’s agriculture as the Indian Meteorological Department works to provide the necessary updates to farmers and residents alike.
