The Kansas City Current women’s soccer team continues to solidify its reputation as a welcoming environment for LGBTQ fans, with a special focus on inclusivity scheduled for their upcoming Pride Night game against Racing Louisville. This event is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. at CPKC Stadium.
The team recently celebrated a victory over the Chicago Red Stars, claiming a 2-1 win and securing the NWSL’s Central Division in the 2022 Challenge Cup. Current defender Elizabeth Ball expressed the team’s ethos, emphasizing, “Sports can bring people together,” and noting the welcoming atmosphere cultivated at their home games.
The dedication to inclusivity transcends just game days. Current staff actively participated in the city’s Pride Parade, demonstrating their support despite the team’s own commitments during the event. Fans, such as Adrienne and Natalie McCoy, voiced their appreciation for the team’s visibility and support for LGBTQ rights, with Natalie stating, “Showing everyone love is love and everyone matters.”
Throughout June, the Current will sell Pride-themed merchandise, with proceeds benefiting Our Spot KC, a nonprofit that aids the LGBTQ community with essential resources like housing. Additionally, the team, along with Blue Cross Blue Shield KC, will be donating to this organization as part of their commitment to community well-being.
After Saturday’s match, fans will have the opportunity to bid on game-worn jerseys through an online auction, further supporting the initiatives of Our Spot KC. Team vice president of community relations, Ben Aken, highlighted that fans resonate with the Current in ways they may not with other local teams, making their support feel more personal and impactful.
