Renters in Kane County facing challenges with overdue payments and potential eviction have the opportunity to apply for financial assistance through the county’s Homeless Prevention Program. This initiative, which is available until July 31, aims to help residents pay past-due rent and utility bills for up to 12 months, cover three months of future rent, and provide security deposits for rentals.

Eligibility for the program includes earning 80% or less of the area median income, residing in rental units within the county, and being behind on rent or utilities. Additional criteria include experiencing income loss, receiving unemployment benefits, or living in unsafe or overcrowded housing, as well as not having received other federal rental assistance for the same period or previously applied for this program.

Applications can be submitted through an online portal provided by the county, and the processing time for applications is anticipated to be approximately six to eight weeks. Residents with inquiries about the program can reach out via email or phone for assistance.

Funded by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Emergency Rental Assistance program, this initiative was designed to ensure housing stability for renters during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the county is set to shift its focus toward a different grant-funded program through the health department, as it does not plan to seek additional federal funding after the current program ends.

This program embodies a crucial support system aimed at alleviating hardships for renters, particularly as economic uncertainties continue. It showcases the regional commitment to assistance and stability for those in difficult housing situations.
