Vice President Kamala Harris made a notable campaign stop today in Ripon, Wisconsin, the historical site recognized as the birthplace of the Republican Party. She spoke at the Little White Schoolhouse, where the party was founded in 1854.
The event featured former Republican Representative Liz Cheney, who expressed her endorsement of Harris. Cheney, who has a significant history within the Republican Party, highlighted her journey from her early volunteer efforts to her role as the third-ranking Republican in the House during her tenure in Congress.
“I have never voted for a Democrat, but this year, I am proudly casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris,” Cheney declared. She emphasized her belief in Harris’s dedication to the nation, stating, “I know that she loves our country, and I know that she will be a president for all Americans. As a conservative, as a patriot, as a mother, as someone who reveres our Constitution, I am honored to join her in this urgent cause.”
Cheney elaborated on her concerns regarding former President Donald Trump, calling him unfit for office due to his actions surrounding the January 6 Capitol riot. She stated that he violated his oath by trying to remain in power despite losing the election, labeling Trump as lacking compassion and being vindictive.
Throughout her career, Cheney has been a vocal critic of Trump, participating in the Congressional committee that investigated his conduct related to January 6 and voting to impeach him. After losing her reelection bid in 2022 to a Trump-supporting candidate, she continues to voice her dissent against him.
In response to Cheney’s endorsement of Harris, Trump referred to Cheney as a “stupid war hawk” and suggested that her involvement would negatively impact Harris’s campaign.
Harris expressed her gratitude towards Cheney during her speech, commending her bravery and reinforcing her dedication to the Constitution and democracy. She emphasized the importance of maintaining democratic values and criticized Trump for his actions that she believes threaten those values.
As Harris continues her campaign, she aims to garner support from independents and Republicans unhappy with Trump’s leadership, with over 200 prominent Republicans, including Dick Cheney, also publicly backing her candidacy.
