Kakko’s New Chapter: Can He Spark the Kraken’s Success?

Kaapo Kakko started his journey as a forward for the Seattle Kraken with an early arrival at the team’s hotel in Chicago, after traveling overnight from New York. Despite the late hour, the 23-year-old was in high spirits as he prepared for his first meeting with head coach Dan Bylsma. During their conversation, the coach reminisced about watching Kakko at the Men’s World Championships when the young talent played for Team Finland. Bylsma noted the intense discussions among scouts regarding Kakko’s potential, highlighting his impressive performance at just 17 years old, when he scored six goals and added an assist, helping Finland secure the gold medal.

Kakko made history by being the youngest player to claim gold in all three levels of the International Ice Hockey Federation championships—U18, U20, and men’s. After a brief chat with Bylsma, which was preceded by a team meeting, the two engaged in a 1-on-1 video session, both eager for Kakko’s debut against the Chicago Blackhawks.

While Bylsma expressed excitement about Kakko joining the team, he also mentioned the loss of long-time Kraken defenseman Will Borgen, who had developed into an essential player during his time with the organization.

Kakko learned about the trade late Wednesday afternoon and was thrilled to join the Kraken. The addition of the former No. 2 overall draft pick in 2019 addresses the team’s need for more presence in front of the net. Standing at 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 215 pounds, Kakko is known for his ability to recover pucks in the offensive zone and win battles along the boards. His best performance came last season with 18 goals and 22 assists.

Emphasizing his offensive capabilities, Kakko stated that he can make plays, challenge defenses, and score goals while continuing to enhance his two-way play and defensive skills. Bylsma praised Kakko’s size and ability to hold onto the puck, creating opportunities for teammates.

During Thursday’s morning skate, observations suggested that Kakko might participate in power play shifts right from the start, working alongside fellow teammate Jaden Schwartz.

This fresh chapter in Kakko’s career with the Kraken is filled with anticipation and potential. With his proven track record and commitment to improvement, fans can look forward to seeing how he contributes to the team’s success on the ice. His debut carries the promise of exciting opportunities for both Kakko and the Kraken.
