Farmers and community members in Kavala, Kadavu, came together last week to celebrate the inauguration of the Grow Plus greenhouse, a significant initiative focused on promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing local livelihoods.
This ambitious project, executed in partnership with British American Tobacco Fiji’s Grow Plus program and the Ministry of Agriculture, aims to equip farmers with high-quality vegetable seedlings. Varieties such as eggplant, chili, and tomatoes are included, providing essential resources for local agriculture. The greenhouse offers a controlled environment that protects seedlings from pests and diseases, allowing farmers to achieve consistent production throughout the year.
Inaugurated last Friday, this initiative not only seeks to empower rural farmers but also aims to create alternative income streams and decrease reliance on produce from other communities. The overarching goal is to develop a more self-sufficient agricultural sector in the region, which would enable local farmers to thrive and effectively meet their own needs as well as those of their neighbors. This project represents a hopeful step toward sustainable agricultural practices that can drive economic growth and resilience within local farming communities.
