The Kadavu Development Plan for 2025-2035 has been officially introduced as a transformative initiative aimed at empowering local communities within Kadavu, according to Isikeli Vuniwaqa, the provincial council chairman. This strategic framework is designed to tackle historical challenges faced by villagers and outlines a clearer pathway towards achieving their aspirations.

Vuniwaqa emphasized the persistent isolation of Kadavu, attributed to its hilly topography and dependence on water access. Although recent improvements in infrastructure have made some progress, significant challenges remain, particularly concerning transportation links to Suva and the reliability of communication networks. “The network of communication on the island is bad compared to what other provinces have; we suffer very bad links and that’s one downside of our development,” he noted.

The launch event took place at the Great Council of Chiefs’ centre in Suva and marks the culmination of two years of dedicated effort and widespread consultation with various stakeholders. Vuniwaqa expressed the intention of making this an inclusive plan, which involved input from Kadavu’s residents, provincial council members, various governmental departments, the national planning office, the iTaukei Affairs Board, and other relevant organizations.

Development committee chairman Akuila Masi highlighted that the plan is structured around five critical priority areas aimed at enhancing opportunities for the people of Kadavu. This robust framework seeks to address essential needs and lay the groundwork for a more prosperous future for the island’s inhabitants.

The inception of the Kadavu Development Plan signifies an optimistic chapter in the ongoing development of Kadavu’s communities, reflecting a commitment to overcoming obstacles and promoting sustainable growth in the region. Through thoughtful planning and collaboration, there is hope for a brighter future for all residents of Kadavu.
