Kadavu Set for New Drue Village Road as Budget Talks Unfold

Kadavu to Get Major Road Upgrades as Fiji Unveils Multi-Billion Connectivity Push

The Minister for Transport and Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in Kadavu, with a particular emphasis on extending the road from Namara Road to connect Drue village, which is exclusively accessible by boat. This ambitious project is slated to be included in the Fiji Roads Authority’s budget for the fiscal year 2026–27, and may even be expedited if funding allows.

During a recent parliamentary session, Tuisawau also updated the public on other critical road projects underway in Kadavu. He announced the successful completion of the Vunisea to Vacalea Access Road, an essential route for enhancing local connectivity. Upcoming works will include the Jioma Crossing and extensive pavement construction, all part of a larger infrastructure investment totaling $9.9 billion for the area.

These infrastructure upgrades are designed to significantly improve access to markets, healthcare, and educational facilities for local residents. Furthermore, the Fiji Roads Authority is focused on sealing village frontages and implementing coastal protection measures along Nabukelevu Road. Community-oriented initiatives, such as the installation of solar lights at key jetties and vegetation control through community contracts, will also be pursued, alongside scoping studies for potential new projects.

The planned investments in Kadavu’s infrastructure are projected to deliver considerable socio-economic advantages and stimulate tourism in the region’s maritime communities. By enhancing accessibility and upgrading facilities, these initiatives are positioned to elevate the standard of living for residents and promote sustainable growth throughout Kadavu.
