Kadavu Set for New Drue Village Road as Budget Talks Unfold

The Minister for Transport and Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has reiterated the government’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure in Kadavu. A notable focus of their plans is to extend a new road from Namara Road to connect Drue village, which is currently accessible only by boat. This initiative is set to be included in the Fiji Roads Authority’s budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year, with potential for earlier prioritization dependent on available funding.

In a recent parliamentary session, Tuisawau also provided updates on other ongoing road projects within Kadavu. He announced the successful completion of the Vunisea to Vacalea Access Road, which is vital for local connectivity. Future projects will encompass the Jioma Crossing and comprehensive pavement construction, with an overarching investment totaling $9.9 billion dedicated to infrastructure improvements in the region.

The upgrades aim to enhance accessibility to markets, healthcare, and educational services for the local population. The FRA is also working towards sealing village frontages and implementing coastal protection initiatives along Nabukelevu Road. Other community-focused efforts include installing solar lighting at key jetties and engaging in vegetation control through community contracts, alongside conducting scoping studies for prospective projects.

These investments in infrastructural development are expected to yield significant socio-economic benefits and bolster tourism within Kadavu’s maritime communities. By improving access and enhancing infrastructure, these initiatives promise to uplift the quality of life for residents while fostering growth and sustainability in the region.
