Kadavu Rugby Advances to Vanua Championship Semis, Aims to Change the Narrative

Kadavu Rugby Aims to Change Narrative Ahead of Vodafone Vanua Championship Semi-Finals

Kadavu Rugby Captain Vaione Tegu has voiced his pride and determination as his team moves forward to the semi-finals of the Vodafone Vanua Championship. While the team is celebrating their current success, Tegu underscores that their aspirations go beyond simply achieving a top-two finish for next year’s Skipper Cup.

“This campaign is about changing the narrative surrounding Kadavu,” Tegu stated. He strives to illustrate that the province can foster a positive reputation in sports, particularly within domestic competitions. “There’s so much negativity associated with Kadavu. My team and I want to change that perception,” he added.

Tegu expressed gratitude toward Kadavu Rugby Union President Lynda Tabuya and the committee for their steadfast support throughout the season. Their recent nail-biting victory over Tavua, winning 30-29 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, was instrumental in securing their position in the competition. Next up, the team is scheduled to face Taveuni at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva next Tuesday, while Navosa will compete against Rewa in another semifinal matchup.

This achievement highlights Kadavu’s enhancing reputation in rugby, demonstrated by their strong performances in various tournaments. Earlier this season, the team reached the quarter-finals of the Vodafone Vanua Trophy, where they celebrated a notable victory over the Northern Bulls, demonstrating both determination and skill. Coach Josevata Bola previously mentioned that the team was focused on improvement and execution, aligning perfectly with Tegu’s goals for the squad.

Both the male and female Kadavu rugby teams are establishing solid foundations and generating community support, cultivating a spirit of hope and ambition in Fijian rugby. Under the strategic leadership of Tabuya and the commitment of its players, Kadavu is set for continued growth and success in their quest for excellence on the field. Their journey mirrors a wider trend in Fijian rugby, where emerging teams are increasingly competitive, capable of challenging established contenders and transforming the landscape of the sport.
