Kadavu Rugby Captain Vaione Tegu has expressed pride and determination as his team advances to the semi-finals of the Vodafone Vanua Championship. While the squad is pleased with their success thus far, Tegu emphasizes that their ambitions extend beyond merely securing a top-two finish for next year’s Skipper Cup.
“This campaign is about changing the narrative surrounding Kadavu,” Tegu said. He aims to demonstrate that the province can cultivate a positive reputation in sports, particularly in domestic competitions. “There’s so much negativity associated with Kadavu. My team and I want to change that perception,” he stated.
Tegu extended his gratitude to Kadavu Rugby Union President Lynda Tabuya and the committee for their unwavering support throughout the season. Their recent victory over Tavua, where they won 30-29 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, was a crucial step in solidifying their position in the competition. The team is set to face Taveuni next Tuesday at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, while Navosa will go up against Rewa in another semifinal fixture.
This success is a testament to Kadavu’s growing prowess in rugby, as seen in their recent performances across various tournaments. Earlier this season, Kadavu also reached the quarter-finals of the Vodafone Vanua Trophy with a commendable win against the Northern Bulls, showcasing their determination and skill. Coach Josevata Bola noted at the time that the team was focused on both improvement and execution, a sentiment that resonates with Tegu’s current goals for the team.
The Kadavu rugby teams, both male and female, are building solid foundations and fostering community support, creating an atmosphere of hope and ambition within Fijian rugby. Under the strategic leadership of Tabuya and the dedication of its players, Kadavu is poised for continued growth and success in their pursuit of excellence on the field. Their journey reflects a broader trend in Fijian rugby, where emerging teams are increasingly competitive and capable of challenging established contenders.
