The Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry is ramping up its initiatives to bolster food security in Kadavu. Efforts are being made to enhance local food production and promote sustainable agricultural practices across the island.
Teams from the Land Resources Planning and Crop Extension divisions are actively expanding the School Garden Programme at Richmond Methodist High School and Tiliva District School. This program is designed to establish nurseries and box farms, equipping students with invaluable farming skills while instilling healthy eating habits and fostering self-sufficiency among young people.
In addition, officials in the Muani area are assessing logged forest regions to identify degraded land that can be rehabilitated. This project aims to restore soil health, which is crucial for enhancing long-term agricultural productivity.
An agro-ecology demonstration site is also being developed in Solovola, Ravitaki. This site will serve as a platform to promote sustainable farming methods that not only protect the environment but also bolster local food supply.
These efforts reflect a comprehensive strategy by the Ministry to create resilient farming systems that reduce reliance on imported food in rural areas.
