The Ministry of Health & Medical Services’ Echo Surgical Team recently collaborated with Sai Prema and Heart Heroes Fiji to conduct a heart echo screening program across Kadavu, which lasted three days. This outreach program took place at health facilities in Daviqele, Kavala, and Vunisea and aimed to extend specialized cardiac screening services to island communities.

This initiative is part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to combat cardiovascular diseases throughout the nation. Cardiovascular conditions are the leading cause of death in Fiji, contributing to premature mortality and placing considerable strain on families and communities. Many of these conditions are categorized as non-communicable diseases, which are closely associated with lifestyle choices, including poor nutrition, low levels of physical activity, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

The screening program emphasized early detection and raised awareness about heart-related conditions, which is crucial for facilitating timely medical interventions. By identifying potential health issues at an early stage, the initiative aims to improve long-term health outcomes for residents of Kadavu, offering hope for healthier futures in these communities. Such efforts not only address immediate health concerns but also foster a more informed and proactive approach to health in Fiji, showcasing the commitment to enhancing the well-being of its citizens.
