The Echo Surgical Team from the Ministry of Health & Medical Services has joined forces with Sai Prema and Heart Heroes Fiji to implement a heart echo screening program in Kadavu. Spanning three days, this outreach effort took place at health facilities in Daviqele, Kavala, and Vunisea, and aims to bring specialized cardiac screening services to island populations.

This initiative is aligned with the Ministry’s comprehensive strategy to tackle cardiovascular diseases, which remain the leading cause of death in Fiji. These diseases contribute significantly to premature mortality and exert considerable pressure on families and communities. Many of these conditions fall under the category of non-communicable diseases, which are often linked to lifestyle factors such as poor diet, insufficient physical activity, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.

The program focused on early detection and raised awareness regarding heart-related issues, which are vital for enabling timely medical responses. By identifying potential health concerns at an initial stage, this initiative seeks to enhance long-term health outcomes for the residents of Kadavu, providing hope for healthier futures in these locales. Such proactive efforts not only address pressing health challenges but also promote a more informed approach to health overall, reflecting a strong commitment to improving the well-being of Fiji’s citizens. The collaboration stands as a testament to the importance of community health initiatives in creating a healthier, more resilient society.
