The Fiji Police Force has made a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Kadavu, successfully intercepting a major drug shipment. Acting upon strategic intelligence, the Operations Sasamaki Team, currently active in Kadavu, executed a night-time bust on September 19, resulting in the capture of large bags filled with parcels of dried leaves believed to be marijuana.
According to Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kasiano Vusonilawe, the decisive action involved the interception of a fiberglass boat in open waters, ultimately leading to the arrest of five men who remain in custody as investigations continue. This operation showcases the effective enforcement strategies being employed to combat the drug trade in the region.
Further highlighting the comprehensive approach to drug enforcement, separate police actions resulted in the apprehension and charging of two additional individuals for the unlawful possession of methamphetamine. The first, a 35-year-old man, was stopped at a Delainavesi roadblock on September 19, where police discovered a zip-lock bag containing white crystals that tested positive for methamphetamine. The second suspect, a 29-year-old man, was arrested in Nabua on the same date under similar circumstances. Both individuals have been presented in court to face charges.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Vusonilawe commended the public’s role in continually providing vital information to assist law enforcement officials, emphasizing the importance of public collaboration in the ongoing “war on drugs.” He reiterated the force’s unwavering commitment to tackling both “green” and “white” drugs, encouraging citizens to keep contributing valuable information through Crime Stoppers or directly to police commanders.
Operation Sasamaki, which extends across Fiji’s five policing divisions, underscores the police force’s proactive and comprehensive strategy in curbing drug-related activities. This operation is part of a broader initiative seen in Fiji, which involves snap checks and targeted raids, such as previous successful operations in Nadi and other divisions that have resulted in multiple arrests and drug seizures.
The commitment of the Fiji Police Force in these coordinated efforts demonstrates a robust stance against drug-related crimes, fostering a safer environment for the Fijian community. Joint operations and sustained public engagement promise to enhance safety and public health by reducing the prevalence and impact of illicit substances across the nation. This collaborative endeavor between the police and the community is crucial in effectively countering drug trafficking and related criminal activities.
