The Fiji Police Force has achieved a notable triumph in its ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the Kadavu region by intercepting a substantial drug shipment. In a strategic operation executed by the Operations Sasamaki Team, authorities detained large bags containing parcels of suspected marijuana following a nighttime raid on September 19. This operation came as a result of crucial intelligence gathered, leading to the interception of a fiberglass boat in open waters and the subsequent arrest of five men who are currently detained as investigations proceed.
Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Kasiano Vusonilawe, emphasized the effectiveness of their strategies in combating the drug trade. Additionally, separate police operations led to the arrest and charging of two men for methamphetamine possession. On September 19, a 35-year-old man was stopped at a Delainavesi roadblock, where police found a zip-lock bag with methamphetamine. Similarly, a 29-year-old man was arrested in Nabua on the same day. Both have been brought before the court to face related charges.
Commissioner Vusonilawe lauded the public’s crucial role in supplying vital intelligence, stressing the importance of collaboration in the ongoing battle against drugs. He reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to tackling the trade of both marijuana and methamphetamine, urging citizens to continue providing valuable information through Crime Stoppers or directly to police authorities.
Operation Sasamaki is part of a wider initiative encompassing Fiji’s five policing divisions, illustrating the police’s proactive and comprehensive strategy in addressing drug-related crimes. This operation forms part of broader efforts, evidenced by previous successful raids and snap checks in regions like Nadi, which have led to numerous arrests and drug seizures.
The Fiji Police Force’s dedication to these coordinated efforts highlights a firm stance against drug-related offenses, promoting a safer environment for the Fijian population. Sustained public cooperation and joint operations are anticipated to enhance community safety and health by curtailing the prevalence and effects of illegal substances. This collaborative approach between law enforcement and the community is essential for effectively countering drug trafficking and associated criminal behavior.
