Residents of village communities in Kadavu, Fiji, are expressing their dissatisfaction with the police response times, with some incidents reportedly taking as long as three weeks for authorities to respond. District Officer Ravuama Walai pointed out that the delays present significant challenges, particularly when individuals involved in incidents have already moved to Suva by the time police arrive.
The situation is particularly dire in Kavala, located in Eastern Kadavu, where poor network coverage hampers residents’ ability to promptly report crimes. The island’s only police station in Vunisea is responsible for serving the entire area, and its limited resources pose operational difficulties for law enforcement.
These protracted response times contribute to a concerning trend where residents become hesitant to report crimes, which ultimately erodes trust in the justice system. In response to these pressing issues, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has announced plans to establish a police post in Kavala. This initiative is part of broader efforts aimed at combating crime and drug-related issues in Fiji.
