Farmers, students, and families in Cakaudrove have gained improved access to vital services following the completion of the Kacidavui Crossing on Nakobo Road. This initiative has been acknowledged as a significant step towards enhancing rural connectivity in Fiji. Spearheaded by the Minister of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the project embodies the government’s persistent effort to support rural communities and foster inclusive growth.
With an investment of approximately $661,000, the new crossing will substantially benefit Vunisavisavi village and the historical site of Thomas Baker. Ro Filipe emphasized that, beyond addressing accessibility challenges, the project is pivotal in safeguarding cultural heritage and supporting local economic activities. The crossing’s transition from a splash crossing to a low-level one highlights the commitment to commuter safety, particularly for women and schoolchildren.
Peniana Pickering, Head of Nakobo District School, expressed relief over the upgrade, citing past safety issues students faced during the rainy season. The improved infrastructure is part of a broader initiative, as Ro Filipe announced the opening of additional crossings in Lekutu, Wainunu in Bua, and Wairiki in Cakaudrove.
