At just 16 years old, Akosita Levaci is making waves in the cricket world, having transitioned from playing on the village ground of Kabara Island in Fiji’s Lau Group to competing at a national level in prestigious regional tournaments. A key member of the Fiji Women’s Under-19 team, Levaci was one of the youngest players at a recent tournament in New Caledonia, showcasing her immense talent and potential.
Cricket is deeply cherished by the children of Kabara Island, and for Levaci, her love for the sport developed organically. “I started playing cricket when I was in primary school, and since most of my cousins and relatives back in the village always play as well, I grew to love the sport,” she explained. She fondly recalled local competitions held during events like Fiji Day, which fueled her passion for the game. “My parents were very happy when I told them that I had made the team, and they just reminded me to work hard and be humble,” Levaci remarked, reflecting her strong family support.
The bonds she has formed with her teammates, whom she views as family, have been one of the most rewarding aspects of her cricket journey. As she aims for a spot on the final roster of the national women’s under-19 team for the World Cup Qualifiers scheduled in Papua New Guinea next April, Levaci remains dedicated and focused on her goals.
Her story serves not just as motivation for young athletes in Fiji, but also underscores the role of sports in uniting communities. With her unwavering determination and enthusiasm, Levaci has the potential to greatly influence the cricket scene in the region and inspire a new generation of players.
