K-9 Companions: How Dogs Are Transforming City Services

City employees are teaming up with well-trained K-9s to enhance their services.

On National Dog Day, it’s a great opportunity to highlight the teams that collaborate with these canine companions. These specially trained dogs assist city employees significantly in their work.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has initiated a Therapy Dog Program in February 2023 to boost mental health resilience. Launched by career medic Taylor Jones, the program now features 13 therapy dogs that visit EMS staff and personnel at local hospitals. Managing this program involves scheduling therapy visits, fostering relationships with the dogs’ owners, and arranging visits following high-stress calls.

Additionally, the K-9 unit of the Virginia Beach Police Department plays a crucial role in supporting patrol officers during critical incidents such as burglaries and missing persons cases. With a team of 14 handlers, their five K-9s are trained in various specialties: explosives, narcotics, and they also work with SWAT team operations.

Comfort dogs are another essential asset, aiding in the well-being of officers by mitigating the long-term impacts of trauma and stress. In 2021, an English Labrador named Geo (“Gigi”) and a golden retriever named Simba were officially inducted as law enforcement officers, joining the ranks of the department. Their handlers are two master police officers who facilitate their comfort services.

These furry companions are invaluable to our workforce and community, enhancing job performance and well-being.
