A 13-year-old boy was arrested in Laguna Beach for allegedly igniting a firework that caused a brush fire, leading to evacuations in the area. The incident occurred around 2 PM on Monday, near Morningside Drive and Rancho Laguna Road, where the fire spread to approximately five acres.
According to the Laguna Beach Police Department, the fire is suspected to have been started by illegal fireworks. Witnesses reported seeing a juvenile in the vicinity who may have been involved. While two juveniles were briefly detained, they were later confirmed to be witnesses rather than suspects. Investigators obtained video evidence showing the boy lighting a firework and fleeing the scene.
Licensed investigators from both the Laguna Beach Fire Department and the Orange County Fire Authority helped identify the suspect, leading to his arrest on charges of felony reckless burning of forest land. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or immediate threats to structures, resulting in the suspect being released to his parents after processing at the police station, rather than being taken to Orange County Juvenile Hall.
The case is currently under review by the Orange County district attorney’s office for potential criminal charges. Authorities have encouraged anyone with additional information or video footage related to the fire to reach out to the Laguna Beach Police Department.
This incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with the use of illegal fireworks, especially in areas prone to fires. Education on safe practices can help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
