A Cuyahoga County jury has convicted Bionca Ellis on multiple charges, including aggravated murder, in connection with the tragic stabbing of 3-year-old Julian Wood. The incident occurred in June 2024 in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle supermarket in North Olmsted. Ellis, 34, faces sentencing on October 27.
Ellis initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to a range of charges comprising one count of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, one count of endangering children, one count of tampering with evidence, and one count of theft. Following the jury’s deliberations, which commenced after the closing arguments on Tuesday afternoon, they delivered their verdict.
Julian’s parents expressed their grief and relief following the verdict, with his mother, Margot Wood, stating, “This was for him (Julian) today.” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley also extended his condolences to the Wood family, acknowledging the pain they have endured since their son’s death.
The events unfolded on June 3, 2024, when both Julian and Margot Wood were attacked. While Margot sustained injuries that required hospitalization, Julian succumbed to his injuries. Authorities reported finding Ellis, the alleged assailant, walking away from the scene holding a knife; she was detained without resistance.
North Olmsted police characterized the attack as a random act of violence, noting that there were no prior connections between Ellis and the victims. After being indicted by a grand jury just two days after the incident, her bond was set at $5 million. Ellis was once ruled competent to stand trial after receiving treatment at Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare, but her defense sought to alter her plea shortly before the trial.
The trial, which began on October 6, featured several days of testimonies, including insights from expert witnesses regarding Ellis’ mental state. The jury’s decision brings a semblance of justice for the Wood family amidst their profound loss. The outcome highlights the community’s ongoing effort to address violence and support affected families during such tragic circumstances.
