The Fiji National Rugby League Junior Bati team is gearing up to defend the prestigious Petero Civoniceva Shield in a much-anticipated matchup against Australia’s Caloundra State High School tomorrow in Lautoka. This rematch comes after the Junior Bati’s triumph over Caloundra State High in 2023, setting the scene for another thrilling encounter.
Coach Peni Baro expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, noting the diverse backgrounds of the players who have united from various regions of Fiji. “The team’s preparations have been good. Most of these boys came from all over Fiji,” Baro said. He emphasized continuity in the lineup, with many players returning from their recent 28-12 victory over Tonga, which has laid a strong foundation through rigorous training.
The Junior Bati’s roster boasts talent from several prestigious schools, including Lelean Memorial School, Marist Brothers High School, and Nasinu, featuring players who have overcome challenges like dropping out of school to pursue rugby league. The development of these young athletes has been significantly influenced by Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata and coach Asaeli Saravaki, who have focused on enhancing the players’ skills in preparation for this crucial match.
Anticipating a tough contest, Baro acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by Caloundra State High School. “Our opponent Caloundra State High School is a tough opponent. This is more likely a rematch, given they faced us two years ago and will undoubtedly be eager to turn the tide,” he commented.
Baro also called on the community to support the Junior Bati in their quest to retain the title, expressing gratitude to the fans. The match is set to kick off at 10 AM in Churchill Park, generating excitement among supporters eager to witness a display of skill and sportsmanship from both teams.
This event not only showcases the competitive nature of junior rugby league but also emphasizes Fijian rugby’s dedication to nurturing young talent. The growth of these young players suggests a bright future for the sport within the nation.
