June Income Surprise: What SSI Recipients Need to Know!

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will notice a unique payment schedule this June. Typically, 7.4 million Americans who receive SSI checks, including many with disabilities or limited resources, will not receive their expected SSI payment in June due to calendar timing.

According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), SSI benefits are ordinarily disbursed on the first of the month. However, when the first falls on a weekend or holiday, as it does this month with June 1 being a Sunday, payments are issued early. As a result, SSI recipients received their June payment on May 30, leading to an unusual circumstance where they will not receive any checks in June itself.

In addition, Social Security payments, which primarily serve older or retired individuals, follow a separate schedule based on birth dates. For those born between the 1st and 10th of the month, payments occur on the second Wednesday, with payments falling later for those with birthdays later in the month.

Similar adjustments to payment schedules will occur later this year. For example, because of Labor Day on September 1, checks for that month will be distributed early on August 29. Likewise, the November payment will shift due to November 1 landing on a Saturday.

These regular adjustments reflect the SSA’s efforts to maintain a consistent flow of benefits while navigating the complexities of the calendar. Supplemental Security Income remains a crucial support for many individuals, ensuring they receive the assistance they need even amidst scheduling quirks.

For those who rely on SSI, it’s essential to stay informed about these payment schedules to avoid any confusion. On the horizon, recipients can anticipate the timely payments set for July through December—demonstrating that while June may not feature an SSI check, the system is designed to adapt and keep beneficiaries supported throughout the year.
