Julian Lewis Chooses Colorado: What This Means for the Future of Buffaloes Football

Blue-chip quarterback recruit Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis, who holds the distinction of being the highest-ranked uncommitted player for the 2025 class, has officially committed to play for Colorado football under head coach Deion Sanders. The announcement was made on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday.

Previously committed to USC for over a year, Lewis made headlines when he decommitted from the Trojans on Sunday. His decision followed recent visits to top programs, including Georgia and Colorado, and he also expressed interest in Indiana, especially after the Hoosiers started the season with an impressive 10-0 record under new head coach Curt Cignetti.

Lewis is recognized as a four-star recruit in the 247Sports Composite rankings, but different platforms have varying assessments of his talent; ESPN lists him as the second overall player for the class, while Rivals places him as sixth. He stands as the 35th overall player and the sixth-best quarterback according to 247Sports’ Composite metrics.

Originally slated to join the 2026 recruiting class, Lewis successfully reclassified in January, opting to graduate early and bypass a year of high school football. During his sophomore season, he showcased his skills by completing 186 passes out of 280 attempts for a remarkable 3,094 yards, accumulating 48 touchdowns against just two interceptions.

At 6-foot-1, Lewis is positioned to compete for a starting role at Colorado next season, especially with second-year starter Shedeur Sanders expected to enter the NFL Draft as a potential first-round pick. Lewis will join a Buffaloes’ offense currently ranked 26th in scoring for the season.

In reflecting on his commitment to Colorado, Lewis highlighted the advantages of succeeding a successful quarterback like Shedeur Sanders and his desire for early playing opportunities. “Of course, it was big for me just coming in after Shedeur and seeing what he has done at Colorado, what he has turned it into,” Lewis noted. He also expressed his eagerness to compete for a starting spot, stating, “Coach Prime always says the best men are gonna play… I want to come in somewhere and have a chance to play.”

As for his rankings, Lewis is confirmed to be Colorado’s 11th commit for the 2025 recruiting class, which had previously ranked 78th nationwide before his commitment. As Sanders continues to build his program, there’s anticipation surrounding a robust transfer portal strategy, which has been a hallmark of his early tenure at Colorado.

Julian Lewis brings exceptional talent and potential to Colorado, and his commitment adds a strong prospect for the Buffaloes’ future as they aim to elevate their football program. With an influx of promising recruits and a knack for embracing competition, Colorado fans have a lot to be excited about in the coming years.
