Jujutsu Kaisen Blu-ray Upgrades Hint at Fresh Footage for Season 3

The official X (formerly Twitter) account for the popular anime Jujutsu Kaisen has announced that starting December 1, 2023, the versions of the anime available on streaming services will be gradually replaced with updated Blu-ray and DVD versions. This initiative is partly to commemorate the upcoming broadcast of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3. While specific timelines for these updates across various streaming platforms have yet to be confirmed, fans can look forward to enhancements in presentation quality.

Blu-ray releases often differ from their originally aired versions, with typically improved visuals that include reduced dimming and the removal of some censorship. Noteworthy changes in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, particularly in Episode 17—featuring a climactic battle between Sukuna and Mahoraga—have drawn significant attention. This episode was criticized upon its release for appearing incomplete, due to both animation flaws and a revelation from an animator about the episode being only “30% of the intended vision.” Although this statement was later retracted, it highlighted production challenges that impacted the quality of the animation.

The difficulties faced during the production of this episode were exacerbated by an extremely tight schedule, with last-minute adjustments made, such as delaying the release of preview images by approximately five hours to allow for better quality. Despite these efforts, the studio MAPPA faced scrutiny regarding working conditions, especially given the series’ immense popularity and high viewer expectations.

With the release of the Blu-ray version, fans will notice significant animation improvements in Episode 17 and the introduction of new sequences that were not included in the originally aired episode. Other episodes will also receive minor visual corrections, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

Crunchyroll continues to stream the first two seasons of this critically acclaimed series, along with the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film. Anticipation is building for Season 3, which will adapt The Culling Game arc, set to air in Japan on January 8, 2026. Additionally, “Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution,” a compilation film detailing Season 2’s Shibuya Incident arc and previewing the first two episodes of Season 3, has already premiered in Japan on November 7, 2025, with a North American release scheduled for December 5, 2025.

Overall, the transition to improved Blu-ray versions symbolizes a commitment to quality in animation and storytelling, promising fans both a nostalgic revisit and a fresh perspective on the beloved series.
