Judon Joins Falcons: What Does This Mean for the Patriots’ Future?

The New England Patriots have officially traded Pro Bowl pass rusher Matthew Judon to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Judon’s time with the Patriots was marred by a contract dispute that lingered throughout the offseason. Set to earn a base salary of $6.5 million in the final year of his four-year, $54.5 million contract signed in 2021, he had hoped to finish his career in New England. However, the two parties were unable to reach an agreement on a new deal.

Throughout training camp, Judon made it known that he was dissatisfied with his contract, evidenced by various incidents on the field and candid remarks to the media. Although the Patriots extended an initial offer to Judon earlier this offseason, they did not improve it to meet his expectations.

As he prepares to join the Falcons, Judon, who will celebrate his 32nd birthday on Thursday, is looking to make an impact in what is considered a contract year for him. His distinctive red sleeves will complement the Falcons’ uniform.

Judon joined the Patriots as one of their first major free-agent signings following the departure of quarterback Tom Brady and quickly became a key player for the team’s defense. He achieved a career-high of 12.5 sacks in the 2021 season, followed by an impressive 15.5 sacks in 2022, earning Pro Bowl honors in each of those seasons as well as during his tenure with the Baltimore Ravens.

Unfortunately, Judon’s contribution was limited last season due to a torn right lower biceps tendon that sidelined him after just four games. During those appearances, he managed to record four sacks, bringing his total to 32 sacks in 38 games with New England.

Judon’s injury history, combined with his age and previous performance decline, may have influenced the Patriots’ decision not to extend his contract in the long term. The team is currently in a rebuilding phase under new head coach Jerod Mayo and is unlikely to be competitive for the next few seasons. The trade allows the Patriots to bolster their future by acquiring their eighth selection in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
