Jackson State University is currently hosting an exciting Journalism and Media Studies Boot Camp, which is attracting local students eager to enhance their skills during their summer break. This immersive program offers participants a unique opportunity to dive into various aspects of media, including video production, marketing strategies, creative writing, and interviewing techniques.
Students from diverse backgrounds, some traveling as far as Virginia, have expressed enthusiasm for the camp, emphasizing the chance to learn and connect with peers. Trinity Yates, a participant, highlighted her aspirations in media, sharing her favorite activity of filming and editing a chase scene for her class. This hands-on experience has been a highlight for many attendees.
Robert Carter shared that the camp has enriched his learning experience through practical applications, stating, “We get a lot of hands-on experience… I enjoy it.” Marquell Gray appreciated the opportunity to create a newsletter and praised his instructor, Dr. Love, for her insightful teaching methods.
The camp, now in its second year, features accomplished professionals like Howard Ballou, Quentin Smith, and LaKeisha Hinson, who are mentoring the students with their industry knowledge. Given the positive feedback and engagement from the participants, JSU plans to continue offering this valuable program in future years.
This initiative showcases JSU’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of media professionals while providing a platform for creativity and collaboration. It’s a hopeful endeavor that not only enriches students’ academic experiences but also paves the way for strong connections and potential career paths in the media industry.
