Former Tennessee baseball standout Ben Joyce’s 2025 season has come to an early conclusion as he underwent right shoulder surgery this past Wednesday, as confirmed by the Los Angeles Angels. The promising reliever struggled at the season’s start, recording a 6.23 ERA across five appearances and 4.1 innings before being placed on the injured list due to his shoulder issue.
Joyce’s surgery marks the end of the season for the Knoxville native, who made a memorable MLB debut in 2023 after being drafted by the Angels in the third round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He gained significant recognition during the 2024 season, posting impressive stats with a 2.08 ERA in 34.2 innings, striking out 33 batters while allowing 14 walks.
Having initially pitched at Walters State Community College before transferring to the University of Tennessee, Joyce faced a setback in 2021 by missing the entire season. However, he rebounded spectacularly, becoming a standout player in 2022. Joyce’s standout season included a 2-1 record and a 2.23 ERA, featuring a remarkable fastball that hit 105 mph, breaking NCAA records.
Despite this season’s challenges, Joyce has laid a solid foundation for a successful professional career. As he focuses on recovery, fans look forward to his return to the mound with the Angels in 2025, where he may reunite with former teammate Christian Moore, who could also join the Major Leagues by then. Enthusiasts remain optimistic about Joyce’s future contributions to the team after his recovery.
