The excitement of starting college is truly unparalleled. Many first-year students arrive on campus eager to embrace new experiences, friendships, and responsibilities, marking their entry into young adulthood. This sentiment resonates with Wake Forest volleyball’s freshman player Cy Rae Campbell, who is currently experiencing her own journey during the 2024-25 academic year in Winston-Salem.
As she approaches the midway point of her first season, Cy has embraced both the challenges and rewards of collegiate life. With midterms on the horizon and the final month of the regular season ahead, she is keenly aware of the dual importance of academics and athletics. November, recognizing National Native American Heritage Month, holds special significance for her as well.
“This month means a lot to me,” Cy expressed. “It’s about celebrating our past, present, and future, highlighting our community and our advocacy.”
Born and raised in Olathe, Kansas, Cy was an active child with a rich involvement in sports, drawing inspiration from her roots in the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. She emphasizes the importance of Native American contributions to American culture and values the tight-knit community in which she was raised.
“Olathe was a great place to grow up,” she reminisced. “Everything was easily accessible, but I often had to rely on clubs for after-school activities. Volleyball, basketball, and hanging out with friends at the park were my main pastimes.”
Focusing on volleyball, Cy emerged as a top talent while playing at Heritage Christian Academy, ranking as high as No. 28 nationally. Winning state championships in each of her four years and receiving numerous accolades only added to her impressive resume. Yet, she finds her strongest memories rooted in the camaraderie and support from her teammates.
“The best part is sharing these victories with friends. Winning four championships was an incredible achievement, and it was our teamwork that made it happen,” she reflected.
When it came to choosing a college, Cy quickly made up her mind about Wake Forest, committing in July 2022. Moving nearly 1,000 miles from home, she immediately noticed the difference in climate and the vibrant campus culture.
“It’s definitely warmer here! The seasons in Kansas are much more pronounced. I appreciate the inclusive community at Wake Forest, especially the spirit behind their Pro Humanitate motto,” she noted.
On the volleyball front, Cy is part of a talented freshman cohort. As the team approaches the second half of their ACC schedule, Cy is learning to adapt to the elevated pace and physicality of college-level play.
“The game speed is much different. The players are more developed and physical. I’ve had to study the game more strategically, analyzing opponents to find weaknesses,” she explained.
As she continues to adapt and grow, Cy remains focused on her goals. Academic success stands at the forefront of her priorities, alongside building friendships, improving her game in the offseason, and becoming stronger both mentally and physically.
“I want to keep my grades up and connect with fellow students when I have the time. In the offseason, I’ll focus on my training to become a faster and stronger player,” she affirmed.

With a steadfast commitment to her academic and athletic goals, she is on a path that promises growth and success, embodying the spirit of college life while honoring her heritage and community. As she navigates this pivotal time, there is plenty of hope for the bright future that awaits her.
