Josivini Naihamu Nominated for World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year 2025

Fijiana XVs standout Josivini Naihamu has captured international attention by securing a nomination for the Women’s 15s Breakthrough Player of the Year 2025 at the World Rugby Awards. Her remarkable performances during her debut international season have highlighted her as a significant influence on rugby’s future. Competing for the award against New Zealand’s Jorja Miller and Braxton Sorensen-McGee, Naihamu’s nomination follows her notable participation in the recent 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup held in England.

World Rugby acknowledged Naihamu’s exceptional contributions during Fiji’s final pool match against Wales, where she crossed the try-line twice, marking the highest number of tries scored in a single tournament by a player. Throughout her debut season, she tallied seven tries in six Tests, starting with a memorable hat-trick against Tonga during the Oceania Women’s Rugby XV Championship. Fiji celebrated a convincing 54-5 victory in that debut match of hers.

Originating from Vagadra, Nadroga, Naihamu’s rugby journey is celebrated back home, where her family had to walk to a neighbor’s house to watch her play in the World Cup. Her mother, Vilisi Misimisi recalls proudly watching Naihamu’s impactful plays, celebrating her daughter’s successes with heartfelt gratitude.

In addition to the World Rugby nomination, Naihamu was honored with the 2025 Encore Women’s Rookie of the Year award during the Fijian Drua awards, adding another accolade to her blossoming rugby career. As the younger sister of Japan winger Jone Naikabula, Naihamu’s rise in rugby is both a family and national triumph, showcasing the thriving potential of Fijian rugby talent on the world stage.

This recognition is part of a broader trend, with fellow Fijian players also receiving accolades, including nominations at various international rugby award events. The rise of female athletes in Fiji, as embodied by Naihamu’s journey, continues to inspire and pave the way for future generations in rugby and sports.
