Josh Brolin recently expressed his gratitude for his role in Rian Johnson’s upcoming “Knives Out” sequel, titled “Wake Up Dead Man.” In an interview with Variety, Brolin described the film as a significant catalyst in his acting career, particularly during his journey of sobriety. He reflected on his struggles with alcohol, which he details in his memoir “From Under the Truck,” and indicated that this new role presented him with more complexities than he had previously encountered in his career.
Brolin remarked, “I read it and I was like, ‘This is so elevated.’ This writing is supreme.” He admitted to feeling apprehensive about whether he would be able to convey the subtleties required for the character authentically, especially after overcoming challenges with substance abuse. He mentioned that his preparation for the role would have looked very different had he still been drinking, acknowledging the vital impact sobriety has had on his craft.
The ensemble cast for “Wake Up Dead Man” includes notable actors such as Josh O’Connor, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, and Glenn Close, in addition to the franchise’s returning star, Daniel Craig. The “Knives Out” franchise began in 2019 with the original film, followed by “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” in 2022. Johnson previously confirmed this third installment as part of a lucrative deal with Netflix.
Brolin noted a shift in his perspective on acting since achieving sobriety. While he maintained professionalism in his work prior to sobriety, he feels he has now unlocked different levels of performance. He articulated a sense of responsibility to live fully, influenced by the loss of friends who struggled with alcoholism. “I wasn’t one of those people where I didn’t know what happened when I was drinking. I didn’t black out…I was willing to endure those horrible things in order to have an identity,” he shared.
“Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” is slated for release in 2025. The viability of a theatrical release for the film remains unclear. Nonetheless, Craig expressed hopes that it will receive a more extensive theatrical run than “Glass Onion,” highlighting audience desires for family movie outings.
This upcoming film not only marks a pivotal moment in Brolin’s career but also illustrates the transformative power of sobriety within the arts. It’s a hopeful sign that personal challenges can lead to professional growth and deeper connections with art.
As a side note, the engagement of such a talented ensemble casts a bright light on the future of the “Knives Out” franchise, promising audiences an exciting and meaningful cinematic experience.
