Josh Brolin, known for his role as Brand Walsh in the beloved 1985 film The Goonies, has expressed mixed feelings about the upcoming sequel. While Brolin has fond memories of his experience filming the original, he admits to having “trepidation” that the new release may tarnish his cherished recollections.

The original movie, directed by Richard Donner and written by Chris Columbus, follows a group of boys from the Goon Docks who embark on a treasure hunt to save their neighborhood from being demolished for a golf resort. Brolin highlighted the film’s lasting impact, noting how it continues to be adored by each new generation.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he stated, “I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great. The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It’s just everything good about it.” However, he also shared concerns about a potential sequel changing the perception of the original. Jokingly, he commented on the idea of an older Goonies sequel, imagining characters using walkers in comedic situations.

A key factor for Brolin’s optimism about the sequel rests on the involvement of original producer and co-writer Steven Spielberg. He remarked, “If Spielberg approves it, you know it’s going to be good.”

Confirming that The Goonies 2 is in development at Warner Bros since February, the studio will likely draw on Spielberg’s legacy to shape the film. The original film proved to be a massive success, tripling its $19 million budget and grossing $61 million by the end of 1985.

Brolin candidly reflected on how his role in The Goonies was a defining moment in his career, considering it “probably the greatest experience of my life.” Since then, he has continued to flourish in Hollywood, earning critical acclaim and appearing in notable films like No Country for Old Men and Avengers: Infinity War.

Brolin’s mix of nostalgia and hope for the future of The Goonies highlights the enduring impact of the original film on audiences and its potential to connect with new viewers. With the right creative direction, the sequel could capture the same magical essence that made the original a classic.
