“Johnny Weiss: A Rising Star’s Journey to Success in Summer Baseball”

Mundelein senior infielder Johnny Weiss has had an impressive summer, demonstrating both personal growth and team success while playing with the Hitters Black travel team. Weiss played a pivotal role as his team triumphed in high-level tournaments across several states, marking a significant chapter in his baseball journey.

Reflecting on his performance, Weiss expressed satisfaction, noting that this summer was particularly meaningful as it was the team’s final opportunity to compete together. “We proved a lot of people wrong,” he stated, highlighting the success they achieved against some of the top teams nationally. This accomplishment is even more noteworthy given that Weiss experienced challenges during his junior high school season, batting .308 for the Mustangs, who had an impressive record of 24-11-2 and won a Class 4A regional title.

With the support of his father, Weiss undertook a mental reset, focusing on his strengths. He recalled advice from Chicago Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong to “be exactly how you are supposed to be,” which resonated with him. Weiss adapted his approach, concentrating on hitting for contact and utilizing his speed rather than trying to hit home runs. This adjustment paid off as he achieved an impressive batting average of .383 with 25 stolen bases while playing for Hitters Black.

Weiss played a super utility role, effectively covering nearly all positions and even taking on pitching duties, where he shined with a 4-0 record and five saves. His coach, Michael Sisti, praised Weiss for his intelligence on the field and his contributions, emphasizing his strategic insights and leadership.

Looking ahead, Weiss is poised to be a key leader for the Mustangs in the upcoming season, already stepping into a leadership role during summer workouts. Coach Randy Lerner acknowledged Weiss’s dynamism and flexibility, indicating that his abilities will provide the team with diverse options.

In addition to his on-field achievements, Weiss is also considering his college prospects, with increasing interest from junior colleges and Division II and III programs. He aims to visit potential schools this fall as he navigates his athletic future. Despite challenges related to his size, Weiss remains determined, asserting that it fuels his motivation. He is encouraged by recent feedback from coaches who appreciate his style of play.

With his recent accomplishments and a focused approach to his game, Johnny Weiss is well on his way to making a significant impact both in his senior year and beyond. His story serves as an inspiration to young athletes, illustrating the importance of resilience, adaptability, and staying true to oneself.
