John O’Hurley Thanksgiving Traditions: Parade Kickoff, Italian Feast, and Dogs

John O’Hurley recently shared insights into his family’s cherished Thanksgiving traditions, highlighting a blend of delicious food, family gatherings, and, of course, dogs. The 71-year-old actor, best known for hosting The National Dog Show since 2002, revealed these heartfelt customs in a conversation with PEOPLE magazine.

O’Hurley, who has consistently spent every Thanksgiving in New York City, expressed his fondness for a particular Italian restaurant where the family enjoys either a traditional or Italian-style Thanksgiving dinner. This unique culinary choice is just the beginning of their Thanksgiving festivities.

A key highlight for the O’Hurley family is their longstanding participation in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which airs before the National Dog Show. O’Hurley proudly noted that this has been a family tradition ever since his son was born, who is now turning 19 this year. He fondly recalled, “We’re always at the beginning of the Macy’s parade. It’s been historically in our family. There were several years where we didn’t have him. He grew up on the show. He grew up at the beginning of the parade every year. It’s always been a wonderful tradition.”

This blend of family bonding and festive celebration reflects a deep love for both their traditions and the spirit of Thanksgiving, showcasing how personal rituals can create lasting memories. O’Hurley’s festive recounting serves as a reminder that Thanksgiving is not just about the meal, but about the people, experiences, and unique family traditions that enrich our lives.
